Review of the Primary Curriculum
The importance of play
2.69. For young
children the importance of play is rightly emphasised by early
years experts and practitioners, drawing on the broad evidence
base available in this area. The value of play to children’s
learning and development should be made explicit in any
revisions to the primary curriculum. The organisation for
Training, Advancement and Co-operation in Teaching Young
Children (TACTYC), for example, have
highlighted the following benefits of play:
• Contributes to
children’s physical and mental health and well-being;
• Helps children to
manage risks, safety and hazard;
• Promotes
enjoyment and achievement and thus motivates children to
persevere in learning;
• Fosters conflict
resolution, making good choices and belonging;
• Enables children
to develop flexible and creative approaches to learning and
problem-solving.
